Simple pleasures

Sometimes I make especially good food.  Garlic steak and creamy garlic mashed potatoes, flavorful black beans with bacon, sweet potatoes and watermelon.  And there are leftovers so lunch tomorrow will be a treat.  Sometimes simple things can bring me delight.

And sometimes I need to take a moment to notice the good I am doing.  I made an especially nice meal after 1. Cooking breakfast, 2. Taking kids to school, 3.  Working all day, 3. Rushing home to get Gabby to the orthodontist, 4.  Going to piano lessons, 5.  Taking Gabby to dance, 6.  Cleaning the living room and bathroom.  And when one child (who—to be fair—has had a busy, exhausting week but also who had a 2 hour nap before dinner) was asked to unload the dishwasher complained how unfair it was and basically said that I don’t do anything for her (after I had cleaned said child’s room last night because I knew she has been especially busy and I wanted to be nice.  I do these things because I love my family but honestly I feel a bit steamed at the moment because I am the only one who noticed the effort put into dinner and not one nice word was said about it or anything else.)

Also Carrian Cheney who runs Oh Sweet Basil appreciated a comment I made on IG about the blessings of family dinner.  So she sent me her cookbook! The garlic steak I made tonight is from her cookbook.
